News about ReD's recent FEIDAD Award appears on major Portuguese Newspapers. On May 11th, the section on Culture of the PUBLICO Journal announces: 'Arquitectos Portugueses distinguidos em Taiwan'. On may 21st, the special Sunday section of CORREO da AMAÑÁ dedicates a page to ReD, with a tittle that says: 'Portugues vence FEIDAD 2005: Uma dupla de Arrasar'.

LECTURE: ReD lecture + reviews @ Clemson University (USA)

ReD lectures at Clemson University, within the 'Digital-Material' Spring 2006 Talks organized by Doug Hecker, Assistant Professor of the School of Architecture. Prior to this event, both JPS and MMA were invited to jury student design Reviews (Martha Skinner's and Ron Rael's studios, respectively) with a good number of Faculty members from the school and other outside professionals.

AWARD: ReD wins FEIDAD 2005 (Taiwan)

ReD's M-City project receives the "Outstanding Award" (1st Prize) in the 2006 Far Eastern International Digital Architecture Design Award (FEIDAD), with the value of 20,000$ USD.

The Far Eastern International Digital Design Award (The Feidad Award) was conferred for the first time in 2000, its aim being to encourage and honour innovative design created with the aid of digital media. In 2005, the jury which comprised Christian Bruun (Quantum Film), Greg Lynn (Greg Lynn FORM), Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV), Gerhard Schmitt (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Birger Sevaldson (Ocean North), and other distinguished architects, awarded the prize for the sixth time. The 2005 Feidad award includes 126 submissions by architects, students and designers from 26 different countries, exploring digital concepts such as computing, information, electronic media, hyper-, virtual-, and cyberspace in order to help define and discuss future space and architecture in the digital age. Outstanding award for the 2005 edition of Feidad was conferred to ReD Research + Design (Marta Male-Alemany, Jose Pedro Sousa), whose project had already been presented on the pages of ARCH'IT and whose work was featured in "The Storytellers" exhibit, part of the BEYOND MEDIA festival in Florence. PUBLICATION: ReD featured in FRAME and in PASAJES (Spain)

Written by Anneke Bokern, the article "Attack of the Umbrellas" presents ReD's M-City project for the Kunsthaus, Graz, in the #49 March/April issue of FRAME Magazine (p.42). The project is also featured in the Spanish magazine PASAJES #74 (p.38-40)

EXHIBITION: ReD Invited for the Pavillon de l'Arsenal (France)

ReD is invited to exhibit the M-City project at Pavillon de L'Arsenal in Paris, as part of a large itinerant architectural exhibition on "Architectures Scenographies", which will show the major exhibition designs of the past decade. The exhibition will be curated by Christine Desmoulins and designed by Dominique Perrault.

The MCity project developed by ReD in the Kunsthaus Graz is featured in the "Jornal dos Arquitectos" N.222. This work was selected to be part of the "Virus" section, edited by Ines Moreira and Pedro Jordao and dedicated to the "Program" in architecture.

The ESAP hostes a public presentation of the final works produced during the Seminar in Digital Architecture, and an exhibition of the drawings, animations and physical models produced during this initiative.

ReD publishes in ARCH'IT (Italy)

Invited by Paola Giaconia, ReD publishes the text "Topographies of Negotiation: Notes on ReD's Design Project for the M-City Exhibition", in the Allestimenti section of the famous italian architecture website ARCH'IT. Here is the introduction by Paola:

"Kunsthaus Graz is hosting, until January 8th, the exhibit M Stadt - European Cityscapes curated by Marco De Michelis (in collaboration with Katrin Bucher and Peter Pakesch) which celebrates the topic of the "city", seen as one of the most complex and yet most dynamic phenomena in European civilization. The alien bubble designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier along the banks of the river Mur hosts a quite intensive and engaging exhibition design conceived by ReD Research + Design. This architecture and digital fabrication studio is directed by Marta Malé-Alemany and José Pedro Sousa who have both professional and academic experiences in Europe and in the US, and whose works were recently featured as part of "The Storytellers" exhibit within the BEYOND MEDIA festival. The two architects present on the pages of ARCH'IT the immersive and intensive exhibition design they produced in Graz, explaining how they intervened within the intricate architectural context of the Kunsthaus, how they dealt with the legacy of the building's experimental architects, how they let the building itself provoke them."

TEACHING: End of the V.S. Workshop @ SCIArc, LA (USA)

The workshop on VIRTUAL STANDARDIZATION gets to its end. Each student has written a comprehensive AutoLISP program with which they built a physical model. Integrating design and fabrication concerns, the scripts allow for the 3D generation of variable components, material area calculation, individual component labeling and 2D surface unfolding for CNC cutting fabrication.

ReD starts an intensive workshop at SCI-ARC, called "VIRTUAL STANDARDIATION". During 2 weeks, students are introduced to progamming in AutoLISP to explore an integrated process to design and fabricatie irregular structures, through the use of variable components.

PROJECT: VAPOMATIC Loft completed (Spain)

ReD has completed the renovation and interior design of a loft for a photographer in Barcelona. The rooms are organized around the photo studio, a double-height space that can be crossed over a small bridge.

EXHIBITION: ReD invited for the Beyond Media Festival (Italy)

The studio has been invited to be part of 'The Storytellers' show, which will present the work of 30 selected international architecture offices. The festival will be held Dec 1-11 in Florence (Italy).

PROJECT: M-City Opening + Catalog Launching (Austria)

M-City exhibition is now open in Graz, and is a major event in the city's programme of Steirischer Herbs Festival 2005. The show, designed by ReD, will last to January 8, 2006. ReD's work is featured in the exhibition catalog.

PROJECT: M-City Installation completed (Austria)

ReD's installation for the upcoming M-City exhibition at Kunsthaus has been completed sucessfully. Works of 30 different artists (including G. Richter, D. Graham, K. Park, M. Portc and many others) will now begin to be installed for the opening day.
