ReD receives the FEIDAD Award in Taipei (Taiwan)

ReD received the 2005 FEIDAD Award for its MCity Design Project. Making this moment even more special was the fact that the award was delivered by Mr. Cecil Balmond who is one of ReD's most inspiring references in the world of architecture and engineering. The cerimony took place at the Fine Arts Museum in Taipei with the presence of many distinguished guests, including Mr. Toyo Ito and Harvard's GSD Dean Moshen Mostafavi.

ReD's R&D proposal winner at DISONANCIAS

ReD's application to develop a 8-month R&D collaboration with the Basque company IMAR was selected in the DISONANCIAS international Call for Artists.
DISONANCIAS is a platform that liaises and promotes relationships between artists and companies, research centres or public organisations in order to foster innovation in all its aspects and transmit to society the importance of developing creative environments. This year DISONANCIAS international Call for Artists presented 9 basque companies to host creative collaborations with artists. In this context, ReD decided to enter this competition to propose a collaboration with IMAR, a basque company dedicated to applications for perforated sheet metal and expanded metal, which has develop important works for famous architects like Herzog&Meuron. After a selection process that involved an interview with the DISONANCIAS's jury and IMAR's representative, ReD's R&D proposal was selected, and should start in November.

ReD wins Competition "Arquitectar o Ambiente"

ReD, Research + Design, the studio founded by IAAC's faculty members Marta Malé-Alemany and José Pedro Sousa, won the architecural competition "Arquitectar o Ambiente", promoted by the Portuguese company Labicer, with the support of the Portuguese Architects Association. The competition challenged participants to design a temporary installation for the Departures Terminal of the Lisbon Airport, showing innovative applications of Labicer's recycable material 'Vitrakem'. ReD submitted 2 projects, which were both awarded in the competition: "Flying Carpet", an installation that explored Vitrakem as a structural and cladding material, got a Special Honorable Mention, while "Sample Box", an installation that exposed the different colors of the Vitrakem Catalogue, was awarded the 1st prize. The winning entry will now go into fabrication, in order to be installed at the Lisbon Airport in January.

ReD's MCity Project wins "OutrosMercadus" Award

ReD was declared the winner of the 1st edition of the "OutrosMercadus" Award, promoted by the design company OutrosMercadus, the Portuguese Centre for Design and the Portuguese Architects Association. Comprizing a 10.000 Euros prize, this award is dedicated to recognize the excelence in ephemeral architectural projects. Here is the official award release (in portuguese):

"A empresa Outros Mercadus realizou, em conjunto com a Ordem dos Arquitectos e o Centro Português de Design, a 1.ª edição do Prémio "Outros Mercadus – Arquitectura/Espaços Efémeros'06", com o objectivo de distinguir e promover o reconhecimento público de obras de arquitectura/espaços efémeros, levados a cabo no biénio de 2004 e 2005, sendo extensível às mais diversas áreas da cultura, como o cinema, o teatro, as exposições, entre tantas outras. O Prémio pretendeu não só cruzar outras abordagens artísticas, cujas componentes criativa e inovadora foram evidentes, mas acima de tudo premiar uma intervenção, independentemente da sua escala e do local onde estava inserida. Puderam participar neste Prémio todas as obras de arquitectura/espaços efémeros, realizados por profissionais, Arquitectos, Designers e Artistas Plásticos, com residência fixa em Portugal e que se consideraram realizadas ou em actividade no biénio 2004 e 2005, qualquer que seja o país no qual tenham sido executadas. O projecto da Exposição “M-City. European CityEscapes” 2005 de Marta Malé-Alemany + José Pedro Sousa /ReD foi o vencedor da primeira edição. Considerado pelo júri um “projecto de grande clareza conceptual, sendo indissociável a linguagem adoptada e a aplicação de tecnologias recentes”, “M-City” parte ”da exploração da espacialidade do edifício em que se aloja, integrando no desenho do espaço tecnologias digitais que suportam também a execução e produção dos diversos elementos construtivos”. Presidido pelo arquitecto João Mendes Ribeiro, o júri, composto ainda por Inês Moreira, Filipe Alarcão, Paulo Bago d'Uva e Luís Aguiar (em representação da Outros Mercadus), atribuiu ainda uma menção honrosa à obra “Caixa para Guardar o Vazio” da artista plástica Fernanda Fragateiro e duas menções às obras “Moda Lisboa 2005”, da autoria do arquitecto José Adrião, e “Metalux: duas gerações na arquitectura portuguesa recente/Bienal de Veneza 2004” da autoria da [A] ainda arquitectura, lda, dos arquitectos Luís Tavares Pereira e Guiomar Rosa com Pedro Gadanho. A esta primeira edição do Prémio Outros Mercadus concorreram 37 propostas, consideradas pelo júri de “grande qualidade e diversidade”.

AWARD: M-City announced Finalist of the 'Outros Mercadus' Award (Portugal)

ReD's M-City project has been included in the list of 12 finalists in the Ephemeral Architecture Award 'Outros Mercadus'. The winning project wil be announced on September 15th, 2006.The jury includes:João Mendes Ribeiro (President of the jury of the Outros Mercadus'06 Award), Luis Aguiar (Outros Mercadus Company), Inês Moreira (Ordem dos Arquitectos), Paulo Bago d'Uva (Centro Português de Design) and Filipe Alarcão (Ministério da Cultura/Instituto das Artes).

AWARD: ReD wins FEIDAD 2005 (Taiwan)

ReD's M-City project receives the "Outstanding Award" (1st Prize) in the 2006 Far Eastern International Digital Architecture Design Award (FEIDAD), with the value of 20,000$ USD.

The Far Eastern International Digital Design Award (The Feidad Award) was conferred for the first time in 2000, its aim being to encourage and honour innovative design created with the aid of digital media. In 2005, the jury which comprised Christian Bruun (Quantum Film), Greg Lynn (Greg Lynn FORM), Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV), Gerhard Schmitt (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Birger Sevaldson (Ocean North), and other distinguished architects, awarded the prize for the sixth time. The 2005 Feidad award includes 126 submissions by architects, students and designers from 26 different countries, exploring digital concepts such as computing, information, electronic media, hyper-, virtual-, and cyberspace in order to help define and discuss future space and architecture in the digital age. Outstanding award for the 2005 edition of Feidad was conferred to ReD Research + Design (Marta Male-Alemany, Jose Pedro Sousa), whose project had already been presented on the pages of ARCH'IT and whose work was featured in "The Storytellers" exhibit, part of the BEYOND MEDIA festival in Florence.
